Students: Schools are invited to bring a group of up to 15 students, prioritising those with an interest in STEM and from groups which are currently under-represented in green careers (female, Black and Racially Minoritised and low income (FSM)).  The day has been designed for Year 10 students but mixed year groups would also be considered.

Aims of the day:

  • Learners are inspired and motivated by careers opportunities which they may not have otherwise considered, particularly those from groups under-represented in green careers
  • Learners have a deeper level of knowledge and understanding about the role responsibilities, and pathways of careers in areas of interest
  • Learners understand how the local and national labour market is changing and what this might mean for their career choices

Workshops: Schools will select 3 of the following workshops throughout the day, as well as hearing from inspiring speakers currently working within a variety of green careers.

  • Brighton Energy Cooperative – A Future in Renewable Energy – Students will work together to create an experiment with solar PV, build a solar buggy and find out about a range of green career opportunities within the renewable energy sector
  • Rampion Wind Farm – Harnessing the Wind – Students will make predictions and then test the performance of different wind turbine designs. They will work in teams using a model turbine, a standing fan, and a volt meter. While developing their understanding of windpower, they will practise carrying out a ‘fair test’, recording measurements, working as a team, and drawing conclusions from results.
  • Southern Water – Water Supply – Students will work in groups to build and test a mini water supply.  As they work, they will identify challenges to water supply such as leakage, population growth and climate change and discuss water resilience for the future
  • Brighton Repair Cafe – Repair for the Circular Economy – Students will learn about the role of repair skills in the circular economy with a hands-on workshop that reveals what’s happening inside electrical products.  Ideal for students interested in becoming a designer, engineer, material scientist or innovator. 
  • Mackleys Engineering – Environmental Challenges – Pupils will take on the role of Environmental Technicians responsible for planning the repair of an asset eg a bridge / sea wall whilst ensuring they comply with environmental law and protect local wildlife.  Working in teams, they’ll use a project map to identify risk and determine mitigation measures to enable work to proceed safely.  
  • University of Sussex – Spotting the Circles – After a short introduction to the circular economy, students will explore in groups how the circular economy can impact a variety of STEM careers and how green skills are vital to wide variety of jobs at all levels of employment.  

All workshops will include a brief introduction to the presenter’s role, an overview of the range of green jobs in their sector and different possible routes into these jobs. 

Students will be set a workplace group challenge, report back their ideas or solution, receive feedback on their task and reflect on the skills they’ve used during that challenge.

Students are expected to bring their own lunch and will be supervised by their school during the lunchtime.

We aim to send all schools a suite of short videos promoting opportunities in green careers to show to all students within the school over the course of Green Careers Week (2nd – 6th November)
